The other morning, I went about my morning routine as usual. I went downstairs to make some coffee and then into the basement to turn on the water for the bathroom. (We have to shut the hot water off due to a leaky faucet.) As I was starting to come back upstairs from the basement, one of our fly paper traps was swinging from side to side. So, I had to take a closer look and saw something other than a few dead flies.

Bats in my basement

What I saw was a bat stuck to the backside of the trap. I will admit, it fuckin’ freaked me out. Call me a wuss, but I had a bat in my basement. It’s wings were wrapped around the box shaped trap and the head was inside the box. It attempted to eat its way free. My wife was overly concerned with the bat and fished it out of the garbage. I told her there was not much we could do for it. It probably will never fly again because of the glue and a tear it one of the wings.

Of course, she didn’t listen. She ended up calling the Lehigh Valley Zoo to find out what can be done. She ended up peeling its wings off the trap and placed it in a box. She cut up fruit and fed the creature. My co-workers were making fun of me because I was about to have a new pet. Luckily, that is not the case…

I just received my latest cable company bill and was surprised by yet another increase that occured over the last year. Thanks a lot RCN. This time the Showtime/Starz/Cinemax/ETC channels went up to $30 a month. Overall, it is not a bad price if you watch a lot of movies. We used to and always grabbed stuff ON DEMAND since what we wanted to watch was never on when we wanted. Lately, a lot of the movies suck or we just have no interest in. Plus, the ON DEMAND menus are becoming slower and slower with RCN to navigate. It looks like I am dropping the premium movie channels at the end of the billing cycle. The only thing that really sucks is they group the digital music channels with the movie channels. I will definetly miss those 40+ music channels.

In its place I was thinking of either restarting my Blockbuster Online account or starting up with Netflix. Both companies have great response times on delivery and the selections are pretty damn close.

Hopefully my next cable/internet/phone bill will be below $150.

Too bad Gamefly got too expensive or I would restart that service as well.

No it’s not that type of grass. The stoner-acclaimed holiday of 4/20 has come and gone.

I’m talking about the grass in my backyard. A few weeks back I took on the project of repairing my damaged lawn. The lawn was damaged over the years from various sources. Stuff like; previous owners had dogs, my kids running on it, neighbors tree sucking all the moisture out of my ground, raking in the fall stripping it.

So a few weeks back I decided to dig up almost all of my yard. Big dirt patches everywhere. I ended up buying new topsoil and grass seed to lay down. The seeds said 3-5 days for germination and I was getting nervous when nothing was seen for the first 8 days. I was hoping I wouldn’t have a dirt yard for the summer. I was watering it over and over but nothing was happening. However, since the first rain about 2 weeks after planting, grass is growing all over. Pretty soon the kids can walk on it, not like it stops a 7 and 3 year old.

As soon as the grass is in, the picnic table comes out and its time to grill some dead animals.

For Christmas, we got a new bag-less vacuum in the house.  This is to replace the old one I had when I was a mere bachelor. So it must be about 10 years old or so.  So it was time for a replacement.  We have old carpet in the house that is slowly deteriorating and will be replaced this spring.

So, we run the vacuum for the  first time shortly after Christmas. It is pretty cool to see the cyclonic power inside the cannister. It wasn’t cool when we were down with just the living room and dining room. The cannister was already full. I couldn’t belief all the stuff our old vacuum was missing. Which probably explains the respiratory problems my wife and kids were having.  Since we started using it, the coughs and sneezes are minimal.

It’s nice not to buy bags anymore but we do have to empty and clean out our filth. It’s a little more labor in the end but it is worth it.
